A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these treatments need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
