Chelsea Manager Maresca Rejects Manchester City Links as Pure Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh reports linking him with a move to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the persistent speculation surrounding his next move.
Maresca, named Chelsea boss in June 2024, is under contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extra year option.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for these kind of things."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions After Previous Comments
Maresca's latest statement come after he described a previous 48-hour period as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had sparked considerable speculation of a potential disagreement between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the club's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about different things. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would definitely stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on the fans to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: Unresolved Tension
The apparent strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an unhealed issue that still cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the situation in the open, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The mood during the manager's media briefings has become increasingly awkward, raising concerns it could impact what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the season.
Chelsea's sporting position is positive: they are fourth in the league, have reached the Carabao Cup last four, and can secure a favourable Champions League draw with good performances in their final matches.
The prevailing question is whether this off-field dynamic might eventually disrupt a squad that was just starting to appear cohesive.
