Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Presence

One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
